The carbon footprint of wine
Working with M&S and their French supplier to calculate savings on special batches of carbon neutral Beaujolais Nouveau
or the last three years 3Keel has worked with M&S and their French supplier to calculate savings on a special batches of carbon neutral Beaujolais Nouveau launched each November. The use of a new PET design resulted in an 88% reduction in packaging weight. This packaging innovation, combined with a shift of transport mode from road to rail, resulted in a greenhouse gas reduction of more than 30% in 2013.
3Keel’s carbon footprint assessed every stage in the wine’s life cycle, from vineyard through processing, transport and end-of-life. In addition to the savings from rail transport and changed packaging materials (PET – Polyethylene Terephthalate), the carbon footprint also allowed a quantification of carbon offsets required to gain the full ‘carbon neutral’ title.
