Defra have published the final reports of a third round of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) pilot studies – one of which was delivered by 3Keel in partnership with the Woodland Trust. The aim of these pilots was to continue the progress made in developing Defra’s understanding of PES markets. These pilot bids sought to test the PES concept in new contexts, including biomass energy, flood management, and urban and peri-urban settings. The 3Keel project focused on the Smithills Estate in Bolton and explored the potential for payments for ecosystem services on Woodland Trust owned upland fringe estate. The final report can be downloaded from our project case study page – as well as Defra’s research portal.
