The Basics
Name: Tom Carman
Job title: Consultant
Lives: Oxford
Qualifications: BSc in Economics and History. MSc in Food Policy.
Welcome to 3Keel! How have your first days been so far?
Full on – I’ve been on parental leave for 3 months and have also just moved into a new home that needs lots of building work, so I’m trying to gently ease my ‘work muscles’ back in! Everyone I’ve met so far has been super friendly, supportive and helpful which has been really encouraging.
What have you started working on?
I’m straight into Protected Site Strategies project work, supporting team members that are developing landscape scale land management and resilience measures near to protected areas across England.
What are you looking forward to most about working for 3Keel?
I’ve been working in the charitable land and food space for over 15 years as a consultant lead, consultant, project manager and as a practitioner having set up my own food growing enterprise. There’s always been a strong justice aspect to my work and at 3Keel I’m looking forward to ensuring that land is accessed and used in a way that is just, equitable and fair.
Who or what inspired you to work in sustainability?
I visited a community food space in London after a trauma several years ago and found both the space and the people very calming, welcoming and healthy. I’ve continued to meet and work with incredibly talented, warm and caring people throughout my career in this space, and they are what keep me going.
When you’re not working, what do you like to do?
I’m a dad of two boys and love taking them to the park and (trying) to play footie with them! When I can I like to head to the gym, plus occasionally do marathons and tris. I can also make a cob pizza oven, and have one in my back garden – pizza anyone?
