Sustainable sourcing in the service sector
Nando’s
3Keel helped Nando’s to better understand the sustainability issues for its key supply chains. Working with the Do The Right Thing Manager and commercial colleagues, as well as engaging key Nando’s suppliers, 3Keel’s findings were used to inform Nando’s on how it could respond to address priority issues for its business.

At the time, Nando’s had more than 1,000 restaurants worldwide, more than 300 of which were in the UK. As the business grew and the number of meals served increased, Nando’s explored its supply chain as well as onsite operations to understand the best ways to do the right thing.
Beginning with potatoes and chickens, the 3Keel team worked in partnership with ETANTE to engage Nando’s suppliers to understand their priority issues across a range of environmental impacts. Because chicken is so critical, there was a focus on all aspects of poultry production, ranging from farm locations to the composition of feed to the heat needed to keep chickens warm.
By working in partnership with teams across Nando’s – and with its suppliers – the project identified the most important issues. These findings kicked off a series of further initiatives that extended beyond tier one suppliers, to explore the key inputs further up Nando’s supply chain.
Bob Gordon, Nando’s UK Head of Sustainability from 2012-2017, said: “3Keel have been a joy to work with, and have unearthed new opportunities for Nando’s. Their research and technical knowledge has been essential for informing us on the best options for the business to pursue.”
