WEBINAR
How to boost the profile of fisheries in sustainable food systems
How to boost the profile of fisheries in sustainable food systems is designed to help both farming and fisheries experts understand key parallels between sustainable agriculture and sustainable fisheries, and how fisheries can adopt agriculture’s language to boost the recognition of fisheries as a crucial part of sustainable food systems. Join 3Keel Senior Consultant Caitlin McCormack and Consultant Florence Wiggins, and co-host Teresa Ish, Oceans Initiative Lead at Walton Family Foundation.
The webinar went out live on Thursday 11 September and the recording is now available to watch on demand.
Context
In recent months, the world’s spotlight has been shone to great effect on the pressures the world’s oceans are experiencing. From David Attenborough’s latest film to the 2025 UN Oceans Conference, important and urgent conversations are taking place that should hopefully lead to more effective action to protect our seas.
Sustainable fisheries need to be part of the action plan. Fish and seafood support millions of livelihoods and many nations are dependent on them for protein. And yet, they are rarely considered within discourse around sustainable food systems and are under-represented as a solution to climate adaptation, food security, and sustainable development.
Much recent momentum and focus around sustainable terrestrial agriculture is linked to key terms such as ‘regenerative’, ‘agroecology’ or ‘nature-based solutions’. To date, however, these terms have rarely been applied to include fisheries.
The 3Keel team worked with Teresa Ish and colleagues at the Walton Family Foundation to investigate how we can translate between the principles behind regenerative agriculture and regenerative fisheries, to raise the profile of fisheries alongside terrestrial agriculture in sustainable food systems discussions. Read the report.
Our webinar covers
- Key parallels and differences between sustainable agriculture and sustainable fisheries systems;
- An overview of the translation of key terms and principles between sustainable agriculture and fisheries;
- Reflections on the potential to apply key sustainable agriculture terms to fisheries to emphasise their critical role in sustainable food systems.
Who should watch?
This webinar is designed for anyone in the agrifood and fisheries sectors who:
- Is looking to understand how to raise the profile of fisheries in sustainable food system discussions;
